Underground Data Center

I recently saw a post on Digg that referenced the hothardware.com article "Sweden's Ultra-Modern Underground Data Center" about one really kick ass underground facility.

The facility used to be a Cold War era nuclear shelter that was purchased by Bahnhof which is one of Sweden's larger ISPs. Bahnhof converted the facility into their Network Operations Center ( NOC ). The facility is named Pionen, and below is the URL to the official site:

http://www.bahnhof.se/colocation.php

Pionen is located 30 meters or so under Stockholm, and features main doors that are 16 inches thick. For backup power there are two diesel generators that can produce 1.5 MW.

You have got to read the article to appreciate the effort Bahnhof took to make this one world class data center.

I don't know if Bahnhof offers tours of the facility, but given that all data centers are locked down it is safe to assume that this place is off limits to urbanspelunkers.

Feel free to leave a comment if you know any more about Bahnhof and/or the Pionen facility
